Simbang Gabi in Dubai keeps a Filipino Christmas tradition close to home

Tens of thousands of Filipino worshippers gathered at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubai for Simbang Gabi in December 2025. The nine-day Catholic tradition is normally associated with early-morning Mass in the Philippines, but Dubai congregations hold evening services that fit local working hours.

Traditional parol lanterns, Filipino food and large outdoor screens helped turn the church grounds into a familiar community space. For many overseas Filipinos, the services offered both a religious observance and a chance to reconnect with the feeling of Christmas at home.

The gathering also showed how cultural traditions can adapt without losing their meaning. Work schedules, distance and a multicultural city change the setting, but the shared experience continues to bring families, friends and volunteers together.
